Pinniped is a Ted Brewer-designed Jason 35, built from scratch by Paul Pessa in Erie, Pennsylvania. She was launched in 1991, about 10 years after her keel was laid.
We are Jonathan and Jenny Woytek, and we purchased Pinniped from Paul and wife Marie in December of 2018. She will remain home-ported in Erie, PA, and we plan to spend many years sailing her and exploring the Great Lakes.
Pinnipeds, commonly known as seals, are a widely distributed and diverse clade of carnivorous, fin-footed, semiaquatic marine mammals (Wikipedia). Pinniped was the name given to the boat by Paul and Marie. While many new owners change the names of their boats, we feel that there is some bit of soul in the name bestowed on a boat by her builder, who worked for 10 years and probably shed no small amount of sweat and blood in her construction. Additionally, her pretty asymmetric spinnaker emblazoned with a larger-than-life walrus would not make much sense on a boat by any other name! :)
Some Stats on Pinniped:
LOA: 34'6"
LWL: 27'4"
Beam: 11'2"
Draft: 5'6"
Air Draft: 51'6" (approximate)
Rig: Cutter rig with removable inner stay, mast and boom by LeFiell Marine.
Sails (all from the Bierig loft in Erie, PA):
Hull is FRP cored with Airex foam, with solid FRP on the centerline, rub rail areas, chain plate areas, and over the entire fin keel. She is ballasted by 6200 lbs. of lead internal to the keel. Interior details include cherry trim, a two-leaf drop-leaf table between long settes, a pilot berth, head with a folding sink, a sizable v-berth, a full galley with three-burner stove, oven, and broiler, a chart table, air conditioning, several large opening ports, and eight Cherubini Yachts bronze portlights. She is tiller steered with a custom adjustable trim tab on the trailing edge of the rudder.
Power is from a Volvo 18HP inboard connected through a 2.4:1 reduction to a Jurjens variable pitch propeller, with pitch control in the cockpit.
Tankage includes 50 gallon aluminum diesel tank with dual Racor filters, 105 gallons water in two stainless tanks, and 25 gallon bladder for holding tank.
We'll post more here as we learn more about her and discover important things that weren't mentioned here!
